Programme:

The film programme shown by Cause and Effect varies each time depending on the type of event/audience, however the following gives a flavour of some of the films in the repertoire:-

Crescendo (Chris Hales)

A girl rehearsing opera uncovers the power of her singing voice. The audience have to jointly sustain a soprano note in order to break things in the film...

Global Warming (Hales/Pellinen)

A video-landscape in a picture frame...a skater on the frozen sea...a rower on a lake at sunset... But the painting is tilting...the skater and rower slide backwards. The audience are called in to encourage the traversal of the painting by regular chanting.

Poetry in Motion (Chris Hales)

The audience are picked up by a video camera and are shown attending an ice-hockey match. The commentator gets more and more delirious, and goals can be scored, as the audience make a lot of movement.

Duel (Chris Hales)

This film takes the 'look and feel' of a Spaghetti Western and changes the setting to a frozen river where two knife-wielding Finns meet for a fight-to-the-death. The audience are able to pass around a green light and blue light in order to extend the 'life expectancy' of each protagonist. The final sequence is edited algorithmically in real-time to give an escalating pace leading to the climax: the demise of the losing protagonist.

Jinxed! (Chris Hales)

A slapstick comedy in which a protagonist prepares in the morning to attend a job interview. Objects in his house are 'jinxed' and this is indicated by a strange sound and an optical distortion. The audience must quickly pass around the 'Flower Power' device - which is tracked by a video camera - in order to unleash the 'jinxed' comedy.

I-Spy (Chris Hales)

This fiction film brings audience participation to a new dimension: rather than just interacting by selection, certain audience members actually feature IN the film!

Staging

The team will bring all computers and camera equipment. The venue needs to provide a large (main) screen with a data (video) projector. A basic sound system, small mixing desk and 2 PA microphones would also be needed. The team do not bring or operate lighting, but it would help the show if this could be provided. It takes about 1.5 hours in the venue to install and wire up the computers and projectors, to place the microphone and video camera, and to calibrate the sound levels.

No internet connection is currently used.

No charge is made for the performance and it is expected to have free public admission, or at a minimal charge. Ideally three "Cause and Effect" personnel are needed to stage the show (two stage presenters and the computer operator) although for reasons of economy the show can be staged by just two people.

The performance duration is 75 - 90 minutes.
